Sushma Swaraj demands apology from Amazon for selling doormats with Indian flag

Sushma Swaraj: External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj took to twitter and tweeted that visas of Amazon officials would be cancelled after Amazon Canada reportedly selling of Indian tricolour doormats.

She demanded an unconditional apology from the Amazon Canada on this issue.  An explanation is also asked the officials of the Amazon regarding the same.  She tweeted “Amazon must tender an unconditional apology. They must withdraw all products insulting our national flag immediately.  If this is not done forthwith, we will not grant Indian Visa to any Amazon official. We will also rescind the Visas issued earlier.”

Amazon Canada has removed the reported products from its catalogue approximately after four hours of Sushma Swaraj’s tweet.  The products now are showing ‘page not found’ error.  The products are also not available in the search results confirming that the item is no longer available for sale on the site.

The issue came to light when a Twitter user put a screen shot of the alleged product before Sushma Swaraj in Twitter.  The user mentioned in a tweet saying that Amazon Canada is selling doormats with India flag on it.  As soon as the tweet caught attention, many searched Amazon Canada site and found the said doormats.

Amazon is one of the biggest and most used e-commerce sites in the world.   It is not directly involved in selling the products and goods.  Many sellers take part in the selling of their products with Amazon as the medium.  The same happened this time around with Amazon where a third-party seller put the tricolour doormats for sale.

Amazon Canada has responded immediately after the tweet from Sushma Swaraj and removed all those products in question.  The products in question have been removed from the site the search results do not show any such anymore.  Other than tweeting, Sushma Swaraj also instructed the Indian High Commission in Canada to take up the matter with Amazon.  She tweeted saying “Indian High Commission in Canada: This is unacceptable. Please take this up with Amazon at the highest level.”
