Sc Verdict: The Supreme Court has convicted VK Sasikala to four years in jail. This was in the disproportionate assets case which dates back to 20 years ago. VK Sasikala, the longtime aide of Jayalalitha has lost chances of becoming State Chief Minister as she cannot contest elections for 10 years.
Four members were convicted including the late Chief Minister J. Jayalalitha. The other three co-accused in the case was Sasikala, her nephew VN Sudhakaran and Sasikala’s sister-in-law Ilavarasi. Her nephew was the same as Jayalalitha’s foster son whom she later disowned. They allegedly acquired assets worth Rs. 66.65 Crores that was disproportionate to their known sources of income.

With this conviction, the long-time aide of the former CM J. Jayalalitha will not be able to contest the elections. Six years after serving a jail term of four years. Sasikala was asked by the bench to surrender before the trial court in Bengaluru immediately. Also, a fine of Rs 10 crore was slapped on her. The open legal recourse Sasikala can go for is a curative petition or review petition. However, Sasikala does not stand entitled for bail. There will not be a stay on the latest verdict if or when a higher bench overturns it.
Sasikala’s conviction under the under the Representation of the People Act debars her from holding a Constitution post for 10 years. People are expecting the Government to announce his decision soon. Now Sasikala’s conviction in the disproportionate assets case paves way for O Panneerselvam to become the Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister. This is a natural choice left for the Governer for the majority on the floor of the house. As per Palaniswamy legislators who were supporting Sasikala will now shift their loyalty to O Panneerselvam.
As per the latest reports Sasikala’s nephew, Sudhakaran came into the limelight at the funeral ceremony of Jayalalitha. Reports also suggest he was a foster son to Jayalalitha. He is one of the four accused in the disproportionate case that dates back to two decades ago. Other accused apart from Sasikala is her sister-in-law Ilavarasi.
