Need for Speed: Carbon Announced

by Shawn White (2006-06-22)

Third-party publisher Electronic Arts announced today that the latest installment of its Need for Speed series, subtitled Carbon, will see release on Wii, alongside other current- and next-generation consoles.

In Need for Speed: Carbon, players will maintain a racing crew as they engage "in an all-out war for the city, risking everything to take over your rivals' neighborhoods one block at a time." Apparently, police pressure eventually moves the races from the inner city to Carbon Canyon (the source of the game's subtitle) and nature's treacherous tracks.

In addition, players will strive to gain control over the game world's seven territories spread across three broad maps. Doing so will allow for certain priviliges, such as modding discounts. With this newest Need for Speed, EA is emphasizing customization options, giving players not only the ability to set the configurations of their rides, with 50-100 cars expected to be available, but those of their crew(s) as well.

"We pride ourselves on our ability to reinvent the franchise and continually uncover new and exciting trends in car culture. Canyon Racing is a real test of a driver's skill and we think it provides a fantastic game play opportunity to lean into," said Larry LaPierre, the game's executive producer.

EA did not specifically state how the Wii controller will be used in the game, nor were screenshots from the Wii version provided at this time.

Need for Speed: Carbon is expected to be released this November. The official site, complete with the game's press release, trailer and screenshots, can be found here.

The Wiire will satisfy your need for speed as more information comes along.
