Wii Would Like To All-Play

by Andrew Clark (2008-07-04)

In the spirit of social interaction, and possibly a marketing device to attract more of an audience for sports games, EA Sports has unveiled their new line of sports games from the Wii. Technically the games are not brand new, EA is simply taking existing franchises and adding features to make them more accessible to everybody, hence the title All-Play. Franchises that will receive this treatment include NCAA Football 09, Madden NFL 09, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09, NBA Live 09, and FIFA Soccer 09.

Changes vary depending on the game, some simplify gameplay, while others add new modes or games that can be played. In NCAA Football, it will feature a simplified playbook and icons will tell players when to pass, tackle and perform other actions. Madden will have a new 'Call Your Shots' mechanic which allows for the creation of plays, anyway you would like. There is also a new 5-on-5 mode with a smaller field, and players in DK mode. For all of you who missed that James Bond reference, DK mode is when the characters or players will have enlarged heads and tiny bodies.

Tiger Woods is going to include some form of online play, added minigames, and players can even be guided by the man who gives advice to Tiger himself, Hank Haney, Tiger's golf coach. NBA Live 09 will feature improved motion controls, which does not seem like it would be hard to improve on garbage. Finally, FIFA Soccer 09 will boast in game Mii support, a new 8-on-8 gameplay mode (alongside 11-on-11), and bonus minigames.

With all of this said, if these sports games really want to be All-Play it might be best to make additions, and not permanently replace the games sports fans have grown to love.
