Kolkata : It has not been a week since Supreme Court passed the order to play National Anthem in theaters before screening the movie and the issues have already started. Theater owners who screen adult films in Kolkata theaters are facing the toughest times due to this new rule.
S K Jha, the booking clerk of regal theater, a theater that screens adult films, said ‘most people come here for pornographic entertainment and a majority belong to the poorer sections of society. How can one expect a crowd coming from a slum to watch ‘Matric Pass 2’ to stand while the national anthem is being played?’
Adult film audience refuse to stand up for the national anthem in theaters, Owners Complain
Few theaters don’t have the manpower to implement the new rule smoothly while few others feel that there is a need to get police help in order to make audience stand in the theaters while national anthem is being played.
Mr. Jha said ‘there are only 11 staff members in all here. It is not possible to leave all our work and engage in asking people stand while the anthem is playing.’ Manager of The Society Cinema Hall, Dr. S A Ferozie, said ‘we will have to get police backup because more often than not, people will ask us why we are bothered if they don’t stand.’
Movie Theaters Owners Find Tough to Implement New Rule
Some owners of theaters said that it has always been a problem to make all the people stand when National Anthem has been playing even before the SC passed the rule. One of the staff of an adult theater said ‘earlier, the anthem used to be played after the film was over. It was observed that once the patriotic fervor came down, people left the auditorium before the anthem was over.’
One of the audience who came to watch an adult film at Regal said ‘I love my country but I have come to watch this film for a different purpose. Why should anyone try to thrust nationalistic feelings upon me? I love my country and I don’t need to show it at a time when I have come to watch an adult film.’
