Nintendo: Metroid Prime Trilogy Still Available, Amazon Disagrees

By Ian Mikutel / Tuesday, 02 February 2010

Three weeks ago a Nintendo representative said Metroid Prime Trilogy was no longer being published or shipped, just four months after the games release. Nintendo now denies it ever made that statement, yet Amazon claims they are no longer offering the game per Nintendo's request.

Confused? Let's walk through the series of events.

Originally Coffee with Games contacted Nintendo as to why Metroid Prime: Trilogy had been out of stock at Amazon for several weeks.

Nintendo's first response: "Unfortunately, Metroid Prime Trilogy is no longer being shipped. Having said that, you may be able to find what you seek through the secondhand video game market,"

Just to be sure, a follow-up email was sent, saying "I was told Metroid Prime: Trilogy is not being shipped/published anymore. Is that true? If so, is there any reason why Metroid Prime: Trilogy isn't being shipped/published?"

Nintendo's second response: "The earlier response regarding Metroid Prime Trilogy was correct: it is no longer being shipped. When first introduced, it was announced that there would be limited availability. However, a reason for this was not announced. That being said, you may still be able to locate a copy via stores that specialize in previously played or used games."

Now Joystiq reports Nintendo PR reps deny ever saying the game was "no longer being shipped".

Nintendo's third response: "Nintendo's Metroid Prime: Trilogy is the ultimate collector's edition experience for fans of the Metroid Prime series, combining all three critically acclaimed games on one disc with Wii motion controls. Copies of the game are currently available at major retailers nationwide. The next highly anticipated offering in the Metroid franchise is Metroid: Other M, which will be available this year."

When pressured by Joystiq, the Nintendo rep stated it is still "clarifying this matter". That was more than two weeks ago, with no clarification yet provided by Nintendo.

Finally, Amazon, the retailer that's lack of Metroid Prime Trilogy stock started this entire debacle, says the game has been discontinued at Nintendo's request.

Amazon's response: "Per Nintendo, we will no longer be offering Metroid Prime Trilogy at this time."

At this point in time, we await an official response (or would that be fourth response?) about Metroid Prime Trilogy's retails status. Until then, keep hunting for an extra copy or two, just in case.
