Nintendo President On Wii HD: "It Needs Something New"

By Ian Mikutel / Monday, 01 February 2010

New comments about Wii HD from Nintendo President Satoru Iwata have emerged after an investor Q&A session. Addressing a question about "Wii HD", the Nintendo CEO denied ever speaking of such a console and questioned whether a Wii with only HD tacked on would sell.

"If I were asked if a Wii that's been made compatible with HD -- just high resolution compatibility -- would be bought by players throughout the world, I'd of course say, 'Do you think it will sell with just that? It needs something new.'"

Based on this statement, it appears to confirm that Nintendo's next console will not simply be a Wii with HD graphics added.

These comments fall in line with last week's report in which Iwata said of a high-definition Wii: "I question whether those features would be enough to get people to buy new machines,".

So just what can we expect from Nintendo's next console? According to Iwata, we have Sony and Microsoft to blame for the lack of details.

"If there were no rival makers in the world, I'd could give examples of the things that we are considering. However, for competitive reasons, I cannot give specifics today on the what or when of the things we're considering."

However, while Iwata can not give specifics today, you can bet The Wiire will report as soon as he does. Until then, fantasize about your next-gen Nintendo console in the comments below.
