Wii Returns to Top Spot in October NPD

By Eric Jones / Sunday, 15 November 2009

Sony's return to the top of the pile in the console market appears to be extremely short-lived, as Nintendo is back to the top of the NPD hardware numbers, thanks to a price drop of their own.

Nintendo sold nearly 507,000 Wii systems in the month of October, after dropping the console to $199 in late September.  Additionally, the Nintendo DS continued to be the most popular handheld platform in North America, breaking 457,000 sold for the month.

It was also a strong month for Nintendo software, as Wii Fit Plus lived up to its pedigree, with the software-only version taking in 232,000 sold, good enough for #5, closely followed by the Balance Board bundle taking #6 with 209,000 sold.  Wii Sports Resort's new twin MotionPlus bundle was a hot debut at #8 with 179,000, and Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days was able to get people over it's unusual title, selling over 169,000 sold.

It'll be interesting to see if Nintendo can keep its momentum through the holidays, with New Super Mario Bros. Wii going up against numerous major PS3 and 360 releases.
