Netflix, The popular mail-order movie rental company expanded once, creating a service where users could stream certain movies, however it was previously restricted to only being able to watch these movies on a computer. Last fall, anyone who had an Xbox 360, an Xbox Live Gold account, and a Netflix membership, were able to combine those elements together, and stream Netflix movies from their Xbox 360 as well. This has thus far been recieved rather well, and Netflix's CEO is eyeing up the PS3, iPhone, and Wii for further expansion.
While ideally with the interest that Netflix's CEO Reed Hastings is showing, we could see a Netflix Channel emerge on the Wii within the next week. Unfortunately, we do not live in an ideal world. Netflix signed an exclusive deal with Microsoft, meaning their streaming service can only come to the Xbox 360, and will not be finding its way onto a Wii or PS3 anytime soon.
There is some light at the end of the tunnel, a small glimmer of hope, however. When talking to Reuters in an interview Reed Hastings stated, "Eventually we want to be on all the game consoles, all the Blu-ray players, all the Internet TVs. So we are working in parallel with all of those efforts." While Netflix's actions and the words of Reed Hastings are a little restricted by the agreement, it seems that Netflix will one day make it possible for Netflix streaming on our Wiis.
