Nintendo recently confirmed that Castlevania: The Adventure ReBirth will be heading to WiiWare in an updated release list. Konami will be releasing it in Q3 this year, which means it is slated for release at some point over the next few weeks.
Castlevania: The Adventure ReBirth is a "reimagining" of the first game in the series to go portable on the Game Boy. In fact, the first game was released in japan on October 27, 1989, almost a full twenty years ago.
Of course, this makes releasing the updated Wii version a month before its anniversary a little strange. Aside from Symphony of the Night, which came out on XBLA and PSN in 2007, there hasn't been many major console re-releases of games from the series. The last I found was Castlevania Chronicles from 2001. We also haven't seen an original 2D "classic-style" Castlevania game on a home console since 1997.
For a long time, Konami has reserved their 2D Castlevania games for portable releases, while consistently attempting to make a successful 3D game on home consoles.
While Castlevania: The Adventure ReBirth isn't a new game, it will definitely look and feel much better than the Game Boy original, similar to Konami's recent WiiWare release, Contra ReBirth. Plus, they birthed Gradius ReBirth some time ago, making this a creepy birth-obsessed release trend.
If Konami keeps on this path, what else could be reborn on WiiWare? Metal Gear? Axelay? Maybe the arcade Simpsons game?
