As reported earlier by Kombo, an interview with Nintendo President Satoru Iwata reveals the company's plans to bring on-demand video to both of their current game systems.
Iwata broke the rumors of video streaming being available on the Wii, a service many seemed to be anticipating. Speaking with the Wall Street Journal, he elaborates a bit on Nintendo's approach to the service, noting that "if the Wii and the DS are connected, it should be possible to download video through the Wii and take it with you on the DS."
To what extent this functionality will be carried out, or whether this feature will be specific to the DSi, is unclear. What is clear is that Nintendo has no intentions of simply copying the other video services that are available.
"When the service begins, you'll see how we're going to do it differently in a Nintendo-like way. There are a lot of on-demand video services, so there's no reason to do the same thing, so we're going to do something different" says Iwata. He confirmed that the service will first be launched in Japan, and if successful, will venture into other territories.
Cue the "rumor confirmed" music. |
