Final Fantasy IV Sequel Coming to Wii

By Mike Suszek / Thursday, 05 March 2009

final-fantasy-ivThe ESRB recently inserted an entry for the cellphone-only sequel to Final Fantasy IV in their database for the Wii.  Titled Final Fantasy IV: The After Years, the sequel originally released in episodic format last year in Japan on mobile devices, seems to take place 17 years after the original 16-bit story.

The ESRB's description of the game reads:

This is a 2D role-playing game in which players embark on an adventure involving magical crystals and a mysterious kingdom. Players traverse across a field map or through dungeons and can enter into turn-based battles along the way. Players use a menu screen to select attacks or magic spells against tiny enemies (e.g., leopards, birds, knights, fish monsters, etc.) that blink and disappear when defeated. An item called "Bacchus Wine" is occasionally used to defeat enemies in battle.

The game was given an E for Everyone rating, and only listed the Wii as its destination.  Kotaku sheds light on some of the interesting features, such as character and monster abilities changing with the phase of the moon, Band Abilities that allow multiple characters to unleash devastating attacks, and their speculation that this will be a WiiWare title set for later this year.

Chalk this up as one of the more interesting things Square Enix has done lately.  What do you hope to see in this game?
