Want to Tap With Me?

By Andrew Clark / Tuesday, 24 February 2009

So how exactly do you play a Wii game without a wiimote? Yuji Naka, the man behind NiGHTS and the Sonic series, wants to show you how, with what he hopes is his next stroke of genius.  Let’s Tap does involve wiimotes, but in no other capacity than to tap. This collection of minigames hopes to set itself apart from the others with this unique control style, and recently Joystiq had some hands-on time with the title.

What Joystiq found was that despite Let’s Tap’s charm and uniqueness, it is a bit on the shallow side. There are four different modes in the game, two of which Joystiq played. The two Joystiq played were Tap Runner and Silent Blocks. Tap Runner is a minigame requiring you to tap to make your character jump, and race against other players. Jumping from object to object, the goal is to finish with the fastest time by avoiding hindrances. Silent Blocks, is essentially a Jenga type game, where the speed of your tapping impacts how fast you pull out the blocks. The other two games that Joystiq did not play were Rhythm Tap, a rhythm game, and bubble voyager.

The theme that seemed to emerge from all of this was that Let’s Tap is a decent amount of fun with some friends. However, after a short while, the game loses its charm, and there really is not much else for players to do. Once you beat all of the levels of Tap Runner, there are only so many more times you can play Jenga before it gets boring. There is no saying how much the game will be enhanced by the two other game modes, and it may turn out to last longer than previously expected.

Let’s Tap is set to release this summer.
