Dragon Quest X Heading for Wii

By Mike Suszek / Wednesday, 10 December 2008

dragon_quest_slimeAt a Nintendo press event Wednesday morning, Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii let slip a one-liner about Square Enix developing Dragon Quest X for Wii.  His note on this unannounced title came at the end of discussion on Dragon Quest IX, which will be available in Japan on March 28.

Japanese site Gemaga provided transcription of the press event, with an English snippet courtesy of Wired's Game|Life Blog:

14:25 -- Horii: "We're currently developing Dragon Quest X on Wii."
14:27 -- Nintendo president Satoru Iwata takes the stage with a huge smile on his face! Iwata: "Thanks very much for announcing Dragon Quest X on Wii!"

Now, Japanese-to-English translations can result in some hacked-up dialogue from time to time, but are we seeing a botched presentation here, or an honest-to-goodness cheerful remark from Iwata?  Regardless, consider Dragon Quest X as officially announced for Wii, whether intentional or not.

Reuters also sheds a little light on the situation, noting that Square Enix intends to "expand the fantasy game's fan base."  Yes, yes, I will eat (some of) my words now.  It is good to see a move like this from Square Enix, as core RPG experiences have been lacking on the Wii as of late.  Add this to High Voltage's as-yet announced RPG, the new Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, and perhaps a new Earthbound, and the Wii could quickly become a great place for RPG fans.
