Midway Could Use Some Help

By Andrew Clark / Thursday, 04 December 2008

Midway is seeing nothing but red. Over the past few years, the only thing Midway has seem to have done is lose more and more money. When looking at Midway's business strategy, one can point to the lack of Wii support as one of the reasons why.

Midway, the creator of such franchises as Mortal Kombat and Rampage, has been struggling with their new projects of late. They've had to delay games, like Stranglehold, and cancel some all together. This lack of performance has wreaked havoc upon Midway's stocks, as they've failed to reach a closing price of $1 per share for thirty straight days.

Ex-employees of Midway recently spoke on the subject, and have blamed licensing the Unreal Engine for both delays and declining quality. The ex-employees claimed that trying to modify the engine for their own games was not the way to go. Instead they would have rather just used the same Unreal Engine that everyone has grown to love. And, while the employees did not say that their lack of Wii support was another reason, one has to wonder if Midway has missed out.

Midway does not have much of a history with the Wii. They have a somewhat successful franchise in Game Party, but other than that, there is not much else there. The way Wii software sells, Midway should look harder at the Wii, and make some much-needed money back.

Should Midway continue with Mortal Kombat games for the Wii, or pursue a new avenue, in the form of a new IP?
