Survey Ranks Wii Hot 2008 Toy For Boys & Girls

By Mike Suszek / Saturday, 22 November 2008

The National Retail Federation recently completed a survey detailing the top toys for 2008, and it shows the Nintendo Wii taking a top spot for both boys and girls.  The survey, which polled 8,758 consumers from November 5-11, results in a mix of "traditional" toys and electronics.  The Wii came in the top ten for both boys and girls; in the second and fifth spots, respectively.

While being number two is nothing to waggle a remote at, the interesting thing is noting the number one toy for boys this year: video games.  Additionally, the Xbox 360 made it on the list (especially having to do with recent price drops) at number 10 for boys.

The trend over the last few years in these surveys finds the Wii gaining popularity.  While it did not appear on the list for 2006, it came in third for boys and seventh for girls in 2007.  Since the survey is conducted in mid-November, the sell-out launch of the Wii may not be accounted for.

What beat the Wii for girls, you may ask?  Barbie and Hannah Montana.  Ironically, they both have Wii games.  Check out the full lists below:'
