Sierra Announces New Mummy Game

By Skylar Wilcox / Sunday, 11 May 2008
Movie-based games have suffered from an unfortunate trend over the years.  Despite selling well, due to strict deadlines (the game almost always has to release on or near the release date for the movie), the games often lack the polish from which similar games without such restrictions benefit, and the Mummy game adaptations thus far have been no exception.  Sierra is looking to change that with The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor for Wii, DS and PS2.

Unlike with most movie-based games, there's no "next gen" version for this game, leaving the developer to focus all its attention on the comparatively weaker Wii and PS2 rather than simply releasing a stripped-down version of the Xbox 360/PS3 game.  This focus already shows in the game's admirable visuals.

The game's screenshots seem to suggest the sort of Prince-of-Persia-with-guns gameplay that has made Tomb Raider Legend and Anniversary so enjoyable, which gives this game more promise than the typical movie-based action game.  Here's hoping it's one of those rare exceptions that defy the trend.
