SEGA of Japan announced Puyo Puyo!, a new iteration in the Puyo Puyo
series of puzzle games (otherwise known as Puyo Pop) built exclusively
for Wii. Puyo Puyo! on Wii will introduce a number of new gameplay modes to the franchise. "Puyo Puyo Together" mode will involve two players working together on the same field as they guide two simultaneously falling pieces into place. The second new mode, called "Remote Controller Puyo Puyo," revolves around the motion-sensing functionality of two Wii Remotes. One controller will rotate the pieces while the other changes their position. Although players can tackle this mode individually, SEGA encouraged cooperative play. In addition to these original multiplayer modes, Puyo Puyo! will feature the franchise's classic battle modes with support for up to four players. Some of original gameplay systems for these battles will be tweaked, however. In one mode, the field of play rotates 180 degrees periodically, while in another, giant Puyo Puyos drop in periodically. It's unknown if the game will support online play via the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. Puyo Puyo! is expected to release in Japan on July 26. SEGA has not confirmed a release in other territories.
