Mortal Kombat: Armageddon to Strike Wii

By Shawn White / Tuesday, 01 August 2006
According to IGN, publisher Midway will bring Mortal Kombat: Armageddon to Nintendo's next-generation console, Wii, in the first quarter of 2007.

"We are extremely excited to be bringing the action of Mortal Kombat: Armageddon to the Nintendo Wii in early 2007," said Midway Chief Marketing Officer Steve Allison. "Our Chicago studio, under the direction of Ed Boon, has been working extremely hard to make Armageddon stand out in a big way with the inclusion of the entire Mortal Kombat character lineup, the Motor Kombat mini-game, a new Konquest mode and several other innovative gameplay additions that help keep the franchise at the top of its genre. We're confident that Wii fans will truly appreciate the finished product when it's ready to hit store shelves."

In March 2006, Mortal Kombat's Co-creator Ed Boon discussed the potential of the franchise on Wii (then code-named Revolution), noting he didn't "know how you could" get a fighting game to work on the console, given that with the Wii controller "you don't have immediate access to a whole bunch of buttons." It would seem the Mortal Kombat team discovered a practical control scheme for the Wii version of Armageddon.

However, Midway has not yet revealed how the Wii controller will work in the game. It's also unknown at this time if Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, and more specifically the Wii version, will appear at the Games Convention in Leipzig, Germany later this month.

The IGN report can be found here.
