The Flatmii device is a simple chip that plugs into the Wii's DVD flex cable, affixed to the Wii by electrical and double-sided tape. It has full compatibility with homebrew, mplayer, and emulators. No word on price yet, however. According to the Flatmii main page:
FLATMII introduces a new concept in the Wii videoconsole use . Tired of DRE's ? Chipset compatibilities with any drivemod , EPOXY'd or lastest unmoddeable D3 drives? Scratched discs? Broken wii dvd disc drives? And long and noisy disc loadings? Share any wii supported format from your PC using Highspeed 2.0 USB protocol . Play, and emulate any of your stored Wii/Gamecube image discs . Soldering installation, clip or any software modification is not required for FLATMII. You can even use your Wii without a Wii DVD drive or if the drive is faulty because it's not required for the FLATMII use. Install FLATMII in only 5 minutes with a few "Plug and Play" steps.
Below is the installation video. Although it looks simple, opening up the console still voids the warranty, so any modification such as this should be handled with care.
