New Boom Blox Information Breaks

By Christopher Holzworth / Wednesday, 12 March 2008
Electronic Gaming Monthly's April 2008 issue has presented a hands-on preview of Steven Spielberg's Wii debut, Boom Blox.

The idea for Boom Blox came to Spielberg why playing an early version of Wii Sports. Nintendo's motion controls struck the legendary film director as a viable enterprise for building up blocks and then knocking them down. According to 1UP Network's Managing Editor Jennifer Tsao, who penned EGM's preview, Spielberg's intuition rings true.

The basic gist of Boom Blox involves gamers using the Wii Remote to launch a ball at stacks of blocks in hopes of starting a sort of chain reaction courtesy of the game's physics engine. While this concept may seem quite simple, Tsao insisted that progress yields difficulty, with some levels proving to be mind-benders. The game will boast approximately 300 single- and multiplayer stages.

If gamers tire of knocking blocks down, they can always turn the tables and build blocks up via Boom Blox's level creator. In this mode, players can design their own original stages, as well as alter the' block types or ball dynamics of existing levels, to create new challenges.

Lastly, EGM profiled the game's Lego-esque animal characters, each boasting a quirky behavior. Beaver, for instance, has a penchant for igniting bomb blocks with sticks of dynamite while Chicken lays the ammunition. Mama Gorilla, on the other hand, will destroy anything in her path to save her babies. Grim Reaper, expectedly, preys on his counterparts. These are just a few of the 30+ characters found in the game.

Steven Spielberg's Boom Blox is the first of a three-game deal with EA's Los Angeles studio. Wii owners can expect the puzzler to drop during May of this year. Stay with The Wiire as new blocks of information fall into reach.
